36,000 LUTHERAN YOUTH
COME TO NEW ORLEANS

JULY 22-26, 2009

Over 36,000 Lutheran high school youth and their adult sponsors came to New Orleans July 22-26 for the National Youth Gathering of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA).


The gathering theme was based on several verses from the Bible:

Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness. And being found in human form, he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death — even death on a cross.

And what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?

SERVANTS BY THE THOUSANDS

Each day, some 12,000 youth went out into the greater New Orleans area to engage the community through servant and learning projects. Think of what an impact this mass serving made!

Through these many acts of serving and caring, these youth embodied the mission identity of The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America: God's Work. Our Hands.
